Start with a question the newsroom should investigate—not a headline the system should already believe. Research assignments collect source material, surface context, and show what was found before editors decide what belongs in an edition.

In the Newsroom, use the assignments desk when it is available to create or inspect research work. The command-line path is the same workflow in operator form: \`npm run content -- assignments create-research --title \<text\> --section \<section-key\> --corpus-key \<key\> --research-mode source\_discovery --apply\`.

Run the assignment with \`npm run content -- assignments run-research --assignment \<id\> --corpus-key \<key\> --research-mode source\_discovery --apply --json\`. The run produces a research packet, not a published article.

Inspect the packet with \`npm run content -- assignments research-packets --assignment \<id\>\`. Use it to register proposed references, request more research, brief reporting work, or leave the finding out of the publication.
